Living in a Fantasy World
“When I examine myself and my methods of thought, I come to the conclusion that the gift of fantasy has meant more to me than any talent for abstract, positive thinking.” (Albert Einstein). He was clearly a genius, but even geniuses forget to put on their pants sometimes.
I write (mostly) fiction which I equate with fantasy. When we think of the word fantasy, we may envision Disney’s Fantasy Land. But the word fantasy can have a myriad of meanings very different than imagination and dream; it can also mean delusion, illusion, nightmare, or vision. “You are living in a fantasy world” is not usually meant as a complement. But as an author, I will take and use it for inspiration. I am living inside my head and I let my imagination rule the day. It may include happy and sad, good times and bad, and sometimes funny and carefree. It’s all fiction and I make it up as I go along.
I do enjoy reading the occasional non-fiction book and encourage others to read non-fiction as well. But I could never write non-fiction. It takes too much work to trust and verify that everything written is factual and true. In fiction, I can write whatever I want, comfortable in the knowledge that its all true, if only in my own head. So yes, I am living in a fantasy world and loving every minute of it.
