During this attack by Hamas on Israel, there is consternation and dissent on Facebook about God and why, if he exists, would He allow this to happen. One post in particular struck me. It was by a woman who declared that she believed in science and evolution. She went on further to say this: ” I will stick with science and the overwhelming evidence of evolution over man-made fairy tales. Even IF your god of the bible was real, he wouldn’t be worthy of worship. He is pure evil- Petty, jealous, murderer- made in man’s image with ALL of man’s worst faults. Don’t believe me- really read the Old Testament- not just the parts you like. He is horrible. Religion is just a way to control the masses and make money off people. “

My retort was that I had read BOTH the Old and New Testaments and it might be beneficial for her to read the New Testament, the part that I DO like best and anyone who has read the New Testament knows why. I also told her I was offended by her comment that “your beliefs and those of all Christians and Jews are ‘man-made fairy tales'”, to which she responded: “I honestly don’t care if it is insulting to your beliefs or not. That isn’t my problem. You can believe in Santa Claus for all I care. Doesn’t make it true. I guess you believe in slavery too. Your god gives instructions on how to handle your slaves. Just don’t beat them so bad they die after two days and your good.”

This sort of argument reminds me of how I view stand-up comedians. A good stand-up doesn’t have to resort to fowl language to be funny. In that same vein, a good discourse can be had until one of the participants runs out of logical retorts, instead saying they “don’t care if they are insulting me and my beliefs”, and then says I must believe in santa claus and slavery. Say what? Quite honestly, the state of the world is as it is, because people like this “don’t care” about or respect others beliefs. Isn’t that why Hamas attacked Israel? They too believe that the beliefs of Christians and Jews are “man-made fairy tales.”
