Colons and Semicolons: This is probably not PC in this day of divisiveness, but here goes anyway: “Here is a lesson in creative writing. First rule: Do not use semicolons. They are transvestite hermaphrodites representing absolutely nothing. All they do is show you’ve been to college.” (Kurt Vonnegut Jr. ) Many new writers struggle with this. They have a tendency to overuse or not at all use semicolons. My thoughts on semicolons are this: I had surgery a few years ago, removing a very small section of my colon. As a result, I have scar tissue that occasionally causes grumbling noises, like I’m hungry. It’s loud enough for others to hear so I have to explain that my stomach growls as a result of my colon surgery and now I have a semicolon. 10/20/23
