Writer’s Rant for 3/17/24

“I clapped because it’s finished, not because I liked it.” (anonymous) Spoiler alert. If you don’t like happy endings, My book RUNNING SHOES is not for you. I wrote and rewrote the ending several times. None of the endings were foreseeable in my original outline. Ultimately, the ending was a surprise, even to me, although looking back, it was predictable. While the story allowed for an infinite number of endings, I believed that the main character had to evolve. He gave up his childhood dream, but only after losing what he valued most- family. And has he grew, he began to understand that what he had lost, he would need to recapture in order to survive. Whether by chance or design, the events leading up to his triumph over adversity are meant to reveal how one young man found the strength and courage to rise above it all. There is enough tragedy within the story without ending it as such. That is why I ended the story as I did. It’s a hopeful one and hopefully one that can bring the reader a sigh of relief. Can I get an amen? 3/17/24
