Writer’s Rant for 3/6/24
These are my Truths
“Fiction is the lie through which we tell the truth” (Albert Camus). I am a writer of (mostly) fiction. I find my ideas however based on truths, which adds veracity to Camus’ statement. Although what I write is fiction from within my imagination, it is based on how things may or could have happened in a different time and place. And those are others’ truths, if not my own. We write what we know about and take liberties to embellish those stories. We can’t limit ourselves to the ordinary or common-place, and it’s a necessary means by which we captivate and gain a wider audience. The stories I tell are true in that they could really have happened and I have witnessed them, at least in my imagination. But alas, the story-telling is all fictional. The characters and their behaviors aren’t real, except that the reader can imagine him or herself in the character’s place. If I am able to instill that within the reader, I have succeeded. 3/6/24
