Writer’s Rant for 2/29/24
“We have to talk” As men, these are probably four of the most feared words ever heard from their partners. Our immediate thought is “what did I do now?” and “will I be sleeping on the couch tonight?” Stand-up comic Nate Bargatze tells stories about interactions with his wife and the “silent treatment”. He recalls watching the movie “The Sixth Sense” in which a wife doesn’t talk to her husband for what seems like a year. As it turns out, he’s already dead and a ghost and his wife doesn’t see him. Nate missed that minor detail. He missed the part where the husband died and just assumed that the wife was still mad at him all that time. As far as those dreaded words, speaking from experience, they can be the result of the most minor infraction, taken totally out of context. It’s all in our genetics. Women remember the details; men look at the big picture. Unfortunately, we have to live according to their detailed recollection of how we got to where we are, which isn’t always pretty. Your best response: “yes dear.”
