Wait For It

“I would like to apologize to anyone I have not offended yet. Wait for it. I will get to you shortly.” The verb “to wait” can mean two very different, yet similar things. Sometimes we have to wait; other times, people wait on us, as in waiters. When in a restaurant, you have to wait for the waiter (or waitress, not to discriminate). The name itself, waiter, gives the job a bad rap. It seems it’s their job to make you wait, and I am not the most patient person. While I don’t like waiting, I don’t have anything against those who wait on me, unless of course, they make me wait. The name “waiter” isn’t used much anymore. Now they’re called “servers”. The hostess says: “Your server will be with you shortly.” Then you wait. I predict that it won’t be long before we stop calling them “servers”. It comes from the verb “to serve” and it was the job of the slave to serve us. I think servers today are slaves in a way. They are paid for their “service”, but slaves to their jobs. With all this said, the phrase “Hurry up and Wait” comes to mind. It’s believed to have been coined by the US Military during WWII, synonymous with military culture. I don’t know how accurate these statistics are, or the source, but Human beings spend approximately 6 months of their lives waiting in line for things and the average person spends about 43 days on hold with automated customer service in their lifetime. One final statistic: we spend approximately 1/3 of our lives sleeping, or waiting to fall sleep. And that’s my cue. ZZZZZ
