Writer’s Rant for 2/1/24

“What’s the difference between a tornado and divorce in the South? Nothing! Someone’s losing a trailer.” Texas, Florida and North Carolina rank highest for the most number of trailer parks in the US. The south has been made fun of for years by our neighbors to the north. The south was once the poorer half of the country, back when it was mostly farms, while the north had become industrialized. But things have changed and continue to change. I live in the Raleigh area and we not only have some of the best universities in the country (Duke, UNC Chapel Hill, NC State U, etc.) , we also have a lot of research and hi-tech companies in Raleigh, The RTP (Research Triangle), Durham, Cary, and Chapel Hill. Yes there are still many trailer parks throughout the south. That cannot be disputed. However, consider this: would you rather find shelter in a mobile home or be homeless and have to seek public shelter? Statistically, the south is doing much better than the north when it comes to housing. The top ten cities with the highest per capita homeless populations, in order are: San Francisco CA, NYC, Long Beach CA, Boston MA, Los Angeles CA, Portland OR, Washington DC, Oakland CA, Seattle WA, and Sacramento CA. What’s the common factor here? Every one of those cities is in the north and/or California. As far as tornadoes, we get our fair share and the impact on trailer parks can be devastating. But it’s not like all that metal is somehow magnetizing the air and pulling the tornadoes toward them. Like we acknowledge, we have more trailers here then up north, which means there are more targets. And tornadoes can do significantly more structural damage to a trailer than a house. As far as divorce, limit your losses. This is a 50/50 state, so grab a chain saw and cut that mobile estate in half. 2/1/24
