Writer’s Rant for 11/30

“Light travels faster than sound. This is why some people appear bright until they speak.” (Steven Wright)- You have probably heard a similar expression, “It’s better to remain silent and thought a fool than to open your mouth and remove all doubt.” This saying has been attributed to Abe Lincoln and Mark Twain among others. Steven Wright is a stand-up comedian and says it for its comedic effect. Its an example of sarcastic wit and an insult when directed at a specific person. It’s purpose changes however when attributed to Lincoln or Twain. It’s not meant to be sarcastic, but more of philosophical statement. I was told recently that sarcasm usually has a negative connotation and is used as a defensive mechanism and an insult to the receiver. I however choose…..in fact insist….that my sarcasm be viewed from the philosophical perspective. And I choose to site its original source, which is Proverbs: “Even a fool, when he holds his peace, is counted wise: and he that shuts his lips is esteemed a man of understanding”. I folks, am a man of understanding.
