RUNNING SHOES
a novel by
Clifford James
About the book:
“Almost all great writers have as their motif, more or less disguised, the passage from childhood to maturity, the clash between the thrill of expectation and the disillusioning knowledge of truth. ‘Lost Illusion’ is the undisclosed title of every novel.” (Andre Maurois).
Running Shoes is a story about two brothers, Nate and Todd, growing up in the Connecticut countryside. Nate seeks solace from the uncertainty in his life by running. He depends on his older brother Todd, for guidance, support, and reassurance as he matures into a young man. The brothers form a bond that enables them, even after Todd has left home to join the marines, to endure and overcome the loss of family, friends and each other, as they are separated over distance and time.
Now on his own, Nate experiences his first love, tests of friendships and the challenges of college as he seeks out a future in the major leagues. He continues to run as an escape from the changes in his life that he must face on his own.
Having left behind all he has ever known, he finds a new relationship in a new place that offers him new hope for love and family. Now he must decide between the love of his life or a career in baseball. The choices he now makes will forever effect his future. On this path forward, he makes a final attempt to locate and reconnect with his brother Todd.
Reunited at last, they encourage and help each other to determine what is truly in their hearts as they prepare for what lies ahead.

From the Author
I was born and raised in upstate NY, on a small twenty acre farm in a town of about 5000 people. After high school, I received my BS from the University of Bridgeport in CT, then moved to Long Island where I spent the next 18 years raising my family. In the early 90’s, I relocated to the Raleigh NC area where I reside today, splitting my time between the Raleigh area and NC coastal town of Newport, on Bogue Sound across from Emerald Isle.
I developed an interest in writing early on in life. In my pre-teens and early teens, I would write short stories with no audience in mind, except myself. Then I discovered my mother was finding and reading them and she encouraged me to continue. In high school, I studied journalism and did primarily sports reporting for the school and local town newspaper and secured a journalism scholarship. I studied journalism, but only for a year, primarily because I did not like the journalism program, which did not allow me to focus on the creative process. My only significant contribution to the literary world at that time was an essay contest which I entered with an essay entitled: “The Importance of Law and Order in Maintaining a Free Society” and I was one of three winners out of 400 entrants. It was written at a time of social and political upheaval and the Viet Nam War.
I began a forty year career as a Human Resources professional shortly after, raised a family and kept busy with a variety of extra-curricular activities, including fifteen years on my horse farm. None of these activities included writing. It wasn’t until Covid and solitary confinement on the coast that I ventured into the book writing world, when I had time to allow my imagination to take over. This is where my first novel RUNNING SHOES was conceived and became a reality.
